While experts and pundits jumping all over Green Book, Viggo tanked the entire campaign.

Just saw Boy Erased. I now see why it had a sort of muted response after debuting at the festivals. It’s a good film. Solid B. Maybe B+ on a good day. The performances were great. I realize this is based on a true story, but I kind of wish the narrative had a little bit more meat to it. Maybe they were trying to avoid melodrama, but I feel like the movie needed a little something extra. It definitely all felt realistic, but for a movie I think the stakes needed to be higher.

    As for Oscar nomination chances:

I think it will score 2 nominations:

Best Supporting Actress for Nicole Kidman. She was amazing in the mother role. I feel like people might be underestimating her chances. She’s NICOLE KIDMAN and she delivered a solid performance. She’ll get in.

Best Original Song: “Revelation” (Troye Sivan)… The song was used twice in the film and used effectively. This will definitely be a major contender in song.

    It might get in…

Adapted Screenplay – This is a shot to honor the Director/Writer. It seemed like a solid adaptation… but nothing spectacular.

Original Score – Not sure if this is eligible… but there were parts of the movie where I was moved by the music.

    Longshot…

Supporting Actor – Russell Crowe. He’s not really featured enough in the film or at least not until the very end. He MIGHT have done enough by the end of the film to gain notice, but I’m not really sure. Kidman’s role is more significant than his.

Best Actor – Lucas Hedges. He’s really great and vulnerable in the role. His final scene with Russell Crowe really delivers. However, with how competitive Best Actor is this year, I don’t really think he did enough to score a nom.

    Why? He’s nice.

But what is the context? Anyway, this will at least do a little harm to GB.

Mortensen has apologized for making that statement, and Ali has accepted that apology. However, the damage may well be done. While I don’t think this incident is going to totally derail the film’s Oscar campaign because the film itself has a very anti-racist message, there’s probably now going to be a major counter-campaign to make sure Mortensen is NOT nominated.

The context is that Viggo is a moron.

I think it’s ridiculous that people are willing to “cancel” Mortensen without hearing the context. You just assumed he just said it for no reason? People are so willing nowadays to have extreme reactions with very limited information.

Mortensen was using the n-word to illustrate the racism of the time Green Book is set in, not to demean anybody.

Maybe the press was just exaggerating. I think that’s what Viggo was trying to express. But poor Viggo.

Racial slurs are a destructive tool of oppression and should not be used by a person who enjoys all the privileges that come with being white, regardless of context. V-Mort’s intentions were good but he had no business using the n-word in any context.

However, he immediately gave a genuine apology. More often than not, people who are called out for saying or doing hurtful things try to get off the hook by issuing dishonest, half-baked non-apologies. V-Mort is showing real remorse.

What’s the point of anything if a person can’t be forgiven for an honest mistake he was instantly willing to learn from?
