Emmy predictions clash: Joyce Eng vs. Tom O’Neil on who’ll win drama series races [Video & Audio Podcast]

“I think it’s going to ‘Handmaid’s’ again,” says my Gold Derby colleague Joyce Eng while sizing up the Emmy race for Best Drama Series in our webcam chat. Watch above or else listen to the audio podcast version below.

She may be right. Currently, I’m picking “Game of Thrones,” but without much confidence, frankly. It triumphed the last two times it was nominated (2017, 2016), but it skipped last year’s eligibility period and so “The Handmaid’s Tale” prevailed and now the two reigning champs face off for the first time ever. At least at the Emmys. As Joyce points out, they competed directly at the producers’, directors’ and writers’ guilds earlier this year where “Thrones” got trounced three times.

Being obstinate by nature, I’m going to stick with it for a while longer as I continue to talk to more and more voters around town about their leanings. In our chat, Joyce and I both confess to being fickle about another drama race, too: Best Actor. She’s currently betting on last year’s champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), but she confesses that she’s tempted to switch. To whom? I switched the other day to Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) and will explain my thoughts in a separate article.
